How to check the gear ratio by turning the tire?
Spin the tire one full turn or 360 degrees. Count how many times the drive shaft rotates. If the driveshaft rotates 3 1/2 times and the tire rotates once, you have an approximate rear axle ratio or final drive ratio of 3.5 to 1. If it rotates 4 1/4 times, you have an approximate ratio of 4.25 to one and soon.
Rotate the wheel TWO and count the number of revolutions of the propeller shaft. The number of revolutions of the propeller shaft will help determine the rear axle ratio. For example, if it spun 3 and a half times, that's a ratio of 3.50:1. If it's turned 4 and a quarter times, that's a ratio of 4.25:1.
With the transmission in neutral, turn the rear propeller shaft by hand.Count the number of revolutions of the drive shaft required for one revolution of the tyre. If the propeller shaft rotates about 3-1/2 times, you have a gear ratio of 3.54, etc.
Open Differential Gear Ratio Test:Lift one side and turn the tire 2 full turns, carefully counting the number of full turns of the drive shaft or pinion yoke. The number of revolutions of the drive shaft will indicate the gear ratio of the ring and pinion.
Simply defined, the gear ratio of a spinning reel isthe number of revolutions of the reel rotor and the guide roller during one full 360 degree rotation of the reel handle.

For a quality medium sized reel you will want to buy a reel with6:1ratio. This will allow you to retrieve just the right size lures very quickly, but it is not so strong that you will be flitting fish across the surface like small pieces.
The "downshift" or gear ratio is calculated bydividing the number of teeth of the large gear by the number of teeth of the small gear. For example, if an electric motor drives a 13-tooth pinion that meshes with a 65-tooth pinion, a reduction of 5:1 (65/13 = 5) is achieved.
The basic formula saysSpeed = Distance/Time. This formula shows that speed is directly proportional to distance and inversely proportional to time.

How does ratio work on a spinning reel?

If you're new to a single speed bike or a fixed gear bike, the gear ratio is approx2,7-2,8will be perfect.
In the small/large gear configuration, when the small gear has completed a full rotation, the large gear has not yet completed a full rotation. Sosmaller gearit makes more revolutions in a given time, turning at a faster rate than the larger gear.

Inches Per Revolution (IPT)
The diameter of the spool affects the amount of line it reels per full turn of the handle. This is sometimes referred to as inches per revolution (IPT). The larger the spool diameter, the higher the IPT. The smaller the spool diameter, the lower the IPT.
